Born March 23, 1936, James Denmark attended the prestigious Pratt Institute of Fine Arts in New York City, where he first discovered his talent in the medium of collage. Using brightly hand-colored papers, found papers, fabric and objects, he creates compositions that go beyond the superficial and transitory, focusing instead on what is eternal and universal. Denmark is one of the Black community's most acclaimed and accomplished artists; his work is eagerly sought by museums and private collectors, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Civil Rights Museum, Hampton University Museum of Art, Oprah Winfrey, Ed Bradley and Harry Belafonte. James created the original work for Fleetwood's First Day Cover for the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott stamp of the 2005 Milestones in the Civil Rights Movement set.
